Nearly twenty years ago, researchers identified interesting sedimentary formations on Mars called Medusa Fossa. The latest data show that they contain huge reserves of ice.
Medusa Fossa is the largest source of dust on Mars, located near the equator. Data from Mars Express, an orbiter from the European Space Agency, shows that it is so much ice that if all of it melted, it would form a layer of water on the surface of Mars 1.5 to 2.7 meters deep. This is equivalent to the amount of water in the Red Sea on Earth.
